Why This Course Matters

Certificate in Autism (EIP) is an application-based programme that focuses on building skills which enables a practitioner to work more effectively with individuals on the autism spectrum.

The programme is designed to bridge the “knowing-doing” gap by adopting a highly hands-on approach to learning. Participants will be expected to translate theoretical frameworks into a practical model, which directs them to analyse needs, select priority goals and design individualised methodology to teach individuals (on the autism spectrum) with varying support levels.

Topics include:

  • The unique learning needs, challenges and strengths of individuals on the autism spectrum
  • Overview of intervention strategies for individuals on the autism spectrum
  • Application of Structured Teaching (TEACCH) principles for intervention
  • Teaching and supporting individuals on the autism spectrum through:
  • Physical Organisation of the learning environment
  • Development and application of visual tools and visual supports
  • Use of schedules, work systems and prompting
  • Explicit Teaching strategies
  • Understanding and Addressing communication needs of learners on the autism spectrum
