Why This Course Matters
This course provides an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), focusing on core characteristics including differences in social communication and interaction, restricted and repetitive behaviours, sensory needs, and learning styles. Participants will explore how individuals on the autism spectrum experience social norms, routines, strong interests, and environmental stimuli, and how these factors influence participation and well-being.
This course will be covered in the 1st week of the New Hire Induction and also introduces participants to Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS/PBS), a schoolwide framework for creating safe, positive, and equitable learning environments where all students feel valued and supported. Participants will explore evidence-based strategies to strengthen academic, social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes, engage families meaningfully, and use data to guide continuous school improvement.
